The Maya Society Spring 2012 program includes:

  • FEBRUARY 3-4, 2012 lecture and workshop on Aztec art by WILLIAM L. "ANDY" BARNES, Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Saint Thomas, Saint Paul, MN.

    • Lecture: William L. Barnes, Time and Meaning in Aztec Art , Friday, February 3, 7:30 p.m. Giddens Learning Center 100E, Hamline University. Maya Society members and students free, visitors $5.

    • Workshop: William L. Barnes,  Mexican Divinatory Almanacs, Saturday, February 4, 9:00 am to noon in the Giddens Learning Center 6S (Anthropology Lab), Hamline University. $10, students free.

  • MARCH 23 lecture and APRIL 14 workshop on archaeoastronomy and Maya skies by JIM ROCK, Science Educator, Dakota Consultant to NASA and NOAA, and adjuct faculty at University of St. Thomas.

    • Lecture: Jim Rock, Indigenous Star Lessons of Turtle Island, Friday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. Giddens Learning Center 100E, Hamline University. Maya Society members and students free, visitors $5.

    • Workshop: Jim Rock, Planetarium Workshop for Maya Skies and 2012, Saturday, April 14 from 9:00 am to noon in the Como Park Elementary School Planetarium, 780 Wheelock Parkway W., St. Paul. $10, students free. For directions, visit: http://apply.spps.org/como_park_elementary.html

  • APRIL 27-28 lecture and workshop on Inka art and architecture by CAROLYN DEAN, Professor, History of Art and Visual Culture, University of California Santa Cruz. Sponsored by Dept. of Art History, and Center for Early Modern History, University of Minnesota; Dept. of Art History, University of St. Thomas; Maya Society of Minnesota.

The Maya Society of Minnesota (MSM) for over 30 years has promoted personal study of the ancient and modern Maya. Our vision is that people have the opportunity to appreciate the Maya and to celebrate and respect their culture and history. Monthly programs and lectures on the Maya and other Mesoamerican cultures are supported by annual memberships and are open to the public. The society also cooperates with and supports schools and other arts and cultural organizations in community education programs.  The Maya Society of Minnesota adheres to the Society for American Archaeology Principles of Archaeological Ethics.
