Goals:
To
study the cultural changes in modern Japan, through the analysis
of movies, popular songs, comic books (manga), Japanese Harlequin
women novels, the new salaryman class, New Age music, detective
stories, fashion and art.
Content:
The economic and political changes in modern Japan have nurtured
many cultural movements. These cultural changes are becoming international
especially in the realm of fashion. The course will study various
cultural topics and place them in their historical and social
context.
Teaching
methods: Students will present oral and written reports on special
cultural expressions. The class will follow a seminar format.
Assignments:
Three essays and three oral reports.
